Who You Are Matters
- I'm from a city in the East Bay Area called Fremont. It's most famous for being the location of The Kite Runner, the headquarters of Tesla Motors, the last station of the BART train service, and for the Mission Peak hiking trail.
- After graduation, I will be entering the Finance Rotation Program for Electronic Arts as a Financial Analyst; I chose this profession because I am deeply passionate about the tech/entertainment industry and believe that this position best combines this passion and the education I have received.
- My eventual goal for my career is to secure a move to one of EA's international locations. TO do this, I plan on learning as much as I can from the various financial departments I'll be working with, while keeping an ear out for any opportunities that may arise.
- My parents got to where they are today through persistence and hard work; growing up, they instilled these principles in me. Thus, I would say I am most like my parents in terms of how I approach my life everyday.
- My parents are conservative by nature; I am unlike them in this aspect in that I consider myself to take significantly more liberal political and social views than they do.
- I would say I am operating under other's expectations of me. Something that I am currently working on is to stop deriving satisfaction from external validation given by others; I often find myself making decisions based on what others will think of me.
- I am a huge soccer aficionado; my role model is Lionel Messi because he is not only the greatest soccer player of all time but also because in order to get to where he was today, many people took leaps of faith on him and believed in him and his raw, untapped talent. Similarly, I am where I am today thanks to a few people believing in me; and he gives me hope that one day I can be as inspirational as he is.
- I did kung-fu for many years; as part of our competition repertoire, Grandmaster assigned me to the eagle style discipline. As part of my preparation, I had to watch a variety of videos on the behavior of eagles so that I could replicate their movements. Eventually, the eagle style form became what I was known for in local kung-fu circles, and so, because of this, I feel a very strong connection with the eagle.
- Growing up, I watched Pocahontas a lot. One of my favorite characters in the movie was the old willow tree, as I felt that she was extremely wise and gave very valuable advice. My 7 year old self would often go to the lake and stare at the willow trees, hoping that one of them would wake up and give me advice on how to navigate elementary school.
Loved reading your post Cynthia! I find it very compelling and inspiring that you differ from your parent's conservative nature. Since we grow up listening to our parents political and social views, it is sometimes hard to separate ourselves from them. I commend you for doing this. I was also very intrigued by your spirit animal. It is extremely interesting that you studied the eagle's behavior and incorporated their movements into your practice. Kung-fu is something I have admired, but never tried. After reading your post, I am going to look into trying a beginner class in Los Angeles.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you Cynthia! Thank you for letting me know East Bay Area is the location for The Kite Runner. I've never known that before. I have a lot of Asian American friends who come from Bay area, and many of them told me that their special interests in tech industries and how that strong spirits in Bay Area influence them. Electronic Arts is a really fancy company ! I've played FIFA and some racing games before. It was amazing to know that you are gonna work for this company! I hope you can enjoy your time there. Also, I found a lot of commons from you too. I did Kung-fu for three years when I young. like Tai Chi and some styles of boxing. Again, it is good to know you.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your job at Electronic Arts. I grew up playing their games and have always admired the company. I also loved it as a little kid because EA are also my initials. I, like you, love soccer and love Messi's talent. However, I struggle to root for Messi because he has knocked out my Mexican National team out of the world cup two out of the last three world cup's.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post! I always wanted to hike the mission peak hiking trail thats so cool how you grew up so close to it. Congratulations on your job, that sounds like a such interesting field to work in and I would love to learn more about how you got into it. It must be hard sometime to have different political views from your parents. Have you ever found it challenging? The willow tree was a very wise and comforting character in the movie, the tree really knew how to comfort the audience.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post, especially the part about you setting your own expectations. I have also been going through the same thing as you. It's a difficult thing to change, but extremely rewarding once you notice you progress. In addition, I really like that you shaped your career around your passion and education. Passion is everything, without it things would not feel as fulfilling.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, way to go for getting that job at EA! It’s great to meet another soccer fan and since we have two classes together I hope we’ll get to talk about sports a lot this semester.
